Do you have a favorite hymn? or two? or three? or more? I love the hymns. Even though I like some of the praise & worship music that is presently used today, it is the hymns that come to mind for encouragement, praise, and comfort.
Some of my favorites:
"Victory in Jesus" - the ultimate victory
"In the Garden" - a song for quiet times and a comfort during troubled times
"Great is thy Faithfulness" - Lamentations 3:21-23 (my favorite verses)
"It is Well With My Soul" - Peace in God in spite of difficult times
"How Great Thou Art" - Praise for God; remember to me how great He is!
I love to hear the congregation singing - the voices blending and harmonizing. Makes me anxious for the singing in heaven! What a preview! I get chills when all the parts are sung in the chorus of the hymn "Wonderful Grace of Jesus":
Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus,
Deeper than the mighty rolling sea;
Wonderful grace, all sufficient for me, for even me.
Broader than the scope of my transgressions,
Greater far than all my sin and shame,
O magnify the precious Name of Jesus. Praise His Name!
I remember that on Sunday evenings, there would be requests. I always requested "Victory in Jesus". As I got older, I remember that Sunday nights were when we sang many praise choruses. John W. Peterson wrote many wonderful songs. "I Just Keep Trusting My Lord" is one of my favorites. There were also the many songs of Ralph Carmichael including "He's Everything to Me" and Bill Gaither's "Gentle Shepherd".
So many wonderful memories. Hymns. Will the praise & worship songs of today sustain us as hymns have for so many for so many years?
I am working on some Bible study lessons focused on several hymns. I will share as lessons are ready.
There is a present day hymn writer - K. Getty - who has written "In Christ Alone". The first time I really listened to it was this past weekend. I'm adding it to my hymn favorites.
His Name Is Wonderful
His Name Is Wonderful,
His Name Is Wonderful,
His Name Is Wonderful,
Jesus My Lord;
He Is The Mighty King,
Master Of Everything.
His Name Is Wonderful,
Jesus My Lord.
He’s The Great Shepherd,
The Rock Of All Ages,
Almighty God Is He;
Bow Down Before Him,
Love And Adore Him.
His Name Is Wonderful,
Jesus, My Lord.
