Before Zack & Dack: Hack & Mack

Before Zack & Dack, there was Hack & Mack. In the picture, Hack is on the top of the cat tree and Mack is on the lower level. You'll notice two stuffed animal kitties resemble Hack & Mack. I affectionately called them Zack & Dack.

I adopted Hack & Mack from the SPCA through a Petco store in 1993 when they were about 6 months old. They were littermate brothers. We had a lot of good times. They were the best cats ever.

Unfortunately they both were diagnosed with feline diabetes in 1999 six months apart. With a wonderful vet and the wise ones at FDMB at felinediabetes.com, we were able to get regulation. I had Mack another 3.5 years with diabetes before he succumbed to it. I had Hack for 6.5 years before he succumbed to it. Home testing and BG curves with a glucose meter along with a high protein low carb diet helped them live much longer than most feline diabetics. They received twice daily insulin injections.

Mack was my cuddler. I could wave two fingers at him, and he would come running for his "noogies"....scratches on his head. He believed that everyone came to see him and to love on him. He could make a cat lover out of anyone. He did not approach people....he expected them to come to him. He helped several other diabetic cats by becoming a demo cat for blood glucose testing and insulin injections. He was such as sweetie.

Hack liked attention too but he was more cautious around people. He was a great follower of his brother and really missed him. But Hack was such a trooper. Twice I thought he wouldn't make it but he chose to fight and did so valiantly. He was my explorer. He loved to go outdoors to explore. In his last year, he would ride in a bag I carried on my shoulder as we would go for walks. He would carry around a feather duster in his mouth as if it was a bird. And his favorite toy was the feather on the end of a "fishing pole"!!

I could go on and on about Hack & Mack and may do so later....but wanted to share my other two boys.....Zack & Dack have legends to live up to while creating their own legends.

p.s. can you tell that I really love orange & white tabbies!?!
