We've been thinking...in the Vestibule

When I lived in Atlanta, I met two new quilting friends, Ann and Jean. We would get together for quilting adventures. It seemed that about every other sentence began with "I've been thinking..." Well, when Jean decided to publish as few patterns with help from Ann and me, the name of the pattern company was "I've BEEn THINkinG" (The capital letters spell out BEE THING....because it evolved from quilting bees....weren't we clever!)

Over the years, I've moved and they've moved...but we have kept in touch. Ann recently came to visit me...it had been eight years since I had seen her. She brought a quilting project to work on while I worked on one of my projects. Unbeknownst to each other, we were working on the same quilt pattern!! We were both working on the Vestibule (a.k.a. Morning Star) pattern. My pattern was from a 1998 workshop at Abram House Quilt Shop, and hers was from a 1999 quilting magazine. We looked at each other and exclaimed...."We've been thinking!" Too too scary. Jean is presently in France, and we are waiting to hear what her current projects include. If she is working on this pattern too....

Back in the late 90's, I was heavily into quilt history and reproduction fabrics. I love the 1800's. I took several workshops with Terry Clothier Thompson and collected as many Barbara Brackman books as I could. So....when those two joined together and started creating fabric lines, well I just had to have the fabric. In addition the fabric was absolutely gorgeous. I purchased complete fat quarter sets of two of their lines: Floral Trails and Material Pleasures. I wanted to use solely those fabrics in a quilt...adding no other fabric line except maybe for the backing. I have looked at pattern after pattern wondering what pattern would best use and showcase the fabrics. I also wanted to use a pattern that was from the 1800's.

In reviewing patterns for another quilt, I came across the Vestibule pattern that Carol Staehle from Abram House Quilt Shop had prepared for a workshop. Hmmmm.....yes, that's the pattern for the Brackman/Thompson fabrics. Interestingly enough I had purchased several additional yards of one of the fabrics to use some how some way with the fat quarters. (I don't remember my logic at the time of purchase, but now it will be great for the stars and the binding.)

I have recalculated the size of the quilt to make it larger and have cut all the pieces. Now I am putting the 1200+ corners on the rectangles. (Can we say "DVD time?!") But anticipation and patience were overruled, and I had to put together a few pieces just to get a feel for the quilt......I think I'm going to like it! A lot!
